If you've binged the Israeli show, 'Shtisel,' or just finished the new series, 'Unorthodox' - you know that Hassidic Judaism is having a Netflix moment. But to understand the philosophy behind the lifestyle, we have to trace the tradition back to the 1700s, when a Polish mystic known as the Baal Shem Tov planted the seeds for what would grow into a Jewish spiritual revolution. In this class, we will be exploring the early teachings of Hassidic Judaism, its Kabbalistic influences, and its encounter with modernity.
